Barry Sharpless）發展出一種新技術，其所具有的高效和高控制性，在化學合成領域掀起了一場風暴，成為目前醫藥領域吸引人的發展方向，被業界認為是未來加快新藥研發有效的技術之一。“點擊化學"的基本思想就是利用碳-雜原子成鍵反應快速實現分子多樣性，一般由疊氮化物（azide）和炔烴（alkyne）作用形共價鍵，具有高效穩定，高特異性等優點。反應不受PH影響，能在常溫條件下的水中進行；具有100%的生物兼容性，甚至能在活細胞中進行。
